passed to deal with the fiscal cliff that are now over the united states senate. if the senate wants to do anything with them, amend them and send them back to the house and perhaps the house will act on it. essentially what boehner is saying is we're not making any moves until the senate amends the two bills we passed over or sends a new one. what are in those bills? well, they essentially extend the bush tax cuts permanently for all earners. and then to avert the sequester and other types of cuts, they make what a lot of liberals have called draconian cuts to meals on wheels, food stamps. it goes into discretionary spending. the house passed bills are absolutely would go nowhere. and would be vee toad by president obama. so this is what we're seeing on the statement the day after christmas is while you guys figure out some solution, we wash our hands of it. >> as a follow-up, i'm putting my press secretary hat on for a second and say the response i would expect from the democratic side from the senate is hey, we passed a bill too. we passed a bill that does the same thing. why don'

with the fiscal cliff and being a member of congress especially a respected member of the senate and what do you think is possible at this point on any type of a large scale deal. what do you see as the most likely scenario moving forward. >> i don't think it's a lack of urgency, but a great deal of concern that republican party failed to do anything. it seems that in the house, boehner has no control over his extreme right wing faction. i think the american people are very clear about what they want. what they want is to ask the wealthiest people in the country to pay their fair share of taxes. there was a poll out the other day, 70% of the american people think folks making over $250,000 a year should pay their fair share. they understand that one out of four corporations are paying nothing. the american people are very, very clear throughout this election and in polling as well. do not cut social security, medicare and medicaid. you have the situation with republicans saying hey, we don't think billionaires should pay a nickel more in taxes, but we think there should be cuts in programs impac

and senate seats and mitt romney rarely discussed the fiscal cliff and we look back on this conversation and we think gosh it would have been nice if we had a plan that had been laid out other than what mitt romney was saying we will deal with this if a piece meal fashion. we come to the table with that as the reality. nonetheless, why is anybody leaving town? why did the president leave town for vacation and the republicans and democrat is. if this is as serious as people say and i think it is serious. it would seem even if the tea party is terrible people and they he don't want to agree with anything. they are are there and you have to deal with them. everyone should say in town. have the little christmas eve dinner. stay in town and figure this out. and the tea party they believe in certain principles and they are fighting for the principles. they think it is a spending problem and not a taxing problem. i tend to agree with them. republicans are probably going to get a worse deal on the table as a result of what happened. nevertheless, the president has to deal with the cards that are

. we acted to put off the fiscal cliff several months ago with a bill that without objection tend all of those bush tax rates into the future and would turn off the sequester by switching defense cuts over to domestic programs. democrats, of course have no intention of doing that. especially after president obama won the election. senate democratic leadership aide tells me that will remains a 50/50 chance we will get a mini deal temporary extension of tax cuts under $250,000 before the january 1 deadline when we would go over the cliff. will are no assurances of that. a white house official told me as president obama prepares to fly back to conduct and participate in the negotiations at the end, there has been no progress over the holiday weekend. michelle, i'm afraid that people who are looking for a deal and looking for a deal by december 31, all hope is not lost. it is not looking good at the moment. >> let's go back to this hitting the debt ceiling on monday. we learned of this because treasury secretary tim good night mother sent a letter to the honorable harry reid majority lead

the fiscal cliff. even some democrats said it was too early to have that mindset. but it seems to be that's what a lot of democrats would now like to see so they can get the 250 number or bell go they certainly don't see the harm necessarily in this happening. or at least the downside doesn't necessarily -- outweigh the positives which is, as you described is the tax cut on the wealthiest earners at a certain threshold. i think that will is a difference between the two sides wanting to go over the cliff which republicans have said dash in part based on that statement that the democrats actively want to go over the cliff. i don't think that's necessarily true. i think that if there is a real danger for both sides in the short term if we go over the cliff because it is bad for the country and, therefore, that will be bad for everybody. that would be bad for the president. but it is true that democrats will be able to get, i think, more of what they want. i think it is worse for republicans. you know as well as anybody that the problems within the house gop caucus are pretty deep. those are
